Rouen, the capital of Upper Normandy, is situated on the river Seine to the north of Paris and has nothing to envy other French towns. The charm of its old town and its prestigious medieval past have earned Rouen the title of town of the one hundred steeples. The old streets, lined with half-timbered houses, are dotted with wonderful examples of gothic architecture: the cathedral, the law courts, the Saint-Ouen abbey, and most of all the famous Gros Horloge (Great Clock).
