Poitiers is the capital of the Poitou-Charentes region, halfway between Paris and Bordeaux. "Lemonum" (as it was once known) is situated on a hilltop surrounded by the Clain and Boivre rivers. Famous for the battle of Poitiers, where Charles Martel stopped the Moors' advance, the town has some exceptional architectural heritage: 80 of its monuments are listed and protected.
Today Poitiers is known for its remarkable quality of life, boasting all the advantages of a large town but with a warm, human character.
