Description
A 20th century masterpiece.
Receiving news of an unexpected inheritance, the gullible Tom Rakewell leaves the countryside and his loving fiancée, Anne Trulove, for London. Manipulated by the troubling Nick Shadow, whom he has hired as a servant, he abandons himself to a life of debauchery and chaos. Later, ruined, Tom ends up playing cards for his soul with his servant who turns out to be the devil. The Rake's Progress is inspired by a series of eight engravings by the English painter William Hogarth entitled "A Rake's Progress" It charts the progressive decline of a young man driven to ruin by a shadowy character - a combination of Mephistopheles and Leporello - who eventually ends up in a madhouse. The myth of Faust is never far away and the shadow of Don Giovanni hovers over this remarkably inventive libretto. Stravinsky was criticised for having composed a pastiche of a Mozart opera. While Mozart did indeed serve as a stylistic reference, this did not prevent the Rite of Spring composer from asserting his own personality using a rich, ambiguous, musical language.
