Eccentric and eclectic, discover the wonders of London
Vibrant, cosmopolitan, yet deeply historic, London is one of the most-visited cities in the world. An important global financial centre, the capital of the United Kingdom is also a multicultural and contemporary city which lies at the forefront of fashion, culture and the arts.
A historic past
London’s history dates back over 2,000 years. In Roman times, Londinium became an important port town. As the centuries passed, the city grew and continued to be shaped by historical events.
During the Middle Ages, London suffered from devastating plagues, before the Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed around 60% of the city. A huge reconstruction effort saw the old timber houses replaced by stone buildings. Many new monuments and churches were built at this time, including Christopher Wren’s magnificent baroque masterpiece, St Paul’s Cathedral.
During the air strikes of World War II, London suffered again, and many buildings were reduced to rubble. However, St Paul’s Cathedral was miraculously untouched, symbolising more than ever the strength of the city in the face of attack.
The royal tradition
London is also the seat of the British monarchy, and as such was the epicentre of the British Empire. At its height, this vast kingdom covered almost a quarter of the world’s surface.
Learn all about the British royal family with a visit to Kensington Palace. Don’t miss the solemn tradition of the Changing of the Guard which takes place every day at Buckingham Palace. You can visit the Tower of London, which dates from 1066, a historic fortress beside the river Thames. This royal castle is also where the Crown Jewels are kept. They have been on display here since 1669, guarded by the Yeomen Warders in their recognisable red uniforms.
You can see Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip in person at the Trooping the Colour, a grand military parade which takes place every year in June for the Queen’s birthday. You may also catch a glimpse of Prince William and his new wife Kate at this royal event.
