Description
Still standing.
After the 1755 earthquake that destroyed the Ribeira Palace, King Jose I took the initiative to build a new palace on the hill of Ajuda. First built in wood, a fire ravaged it in 1794.Finally, the architects Francisco Xavier Fabri and José da Costa e Silva were chosen to take charge of its reconstruction and give it the neoclassical appearance we see today.
Closed after the proclamation of the republic, the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda was reopened in 1968 and turned into a museum. Today, it is home to important collections from the fifteenth to the twentieth century.
