Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, was urbanised in 1674 and is today the country's principal commercial port. Emeritus poet Aimé Césaire was the city's mayor for over 50 years. Ever year in January and February locals have a chance to go insane for the Carnival and foyal'parade, with its cortege of disguises, costumes and also the election of the queens of the Fort-de-France Carnival.
